Panama Canal restrictions tighten today

The Panama Canal Authority is reducing available Panamax transit slots from 25 to 23 from today, 15 September, following lower-than-expected rainfall in the Canal watershed.

Neopanamax capacity has already been reduced to nine daily slots.

The Canal says the measures are necessary despite the rainy season because precipitation remains below expectations amid El Niño conditions. It is also modifying its auction arrangements for transit slots.
