SmartSea announces CEO transition as Julian Panter leaves to joins Noatum-CSM jv, succeeded by Kris Vedat

SmartSea, powered by global air transport IT leader, SITA, today announces a significant leadership transition as Julian Panter steps down as CEO to take on a senior role within the newly formed AD Ports Group & Columbia Group joint venture, Noatum-CSM Limited. Kris Vedat (pictured) has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of SmartSea, ushering in a new phase focused on advancing technology solutions and driving company growth.

SmartSea, launched last year to bring aviation-grade digital integration technologies to the maritime industry, has quickly gained traction in key global hubs. Its platform enables seamless processing of passengers, crew, and cargo across terminals and ports, while linking maritime operations to wider logistics ecosystems, mirroring SITA’s success in the aviation space.

Mr Panter, who was instrumental in launching SmartSea and guiding its early success, will now lead Noatum-CSM Limited as CEO. Bringing over 20 years of experience across the Middle East and deep expertise in maritime joint ventures, Mr Panter’s appointment comes at a crucial moment as the company looks to scale up rapidly.

“I am incredibly proud to have helped launch SmartSea,” said Mr Panter. “The company is entering an exciting new chapter focused on innovation, growth, and strategic integration. With Kris taking the helm, I am confident SmartSea will build on its strong momentum and take its vision to the next level.”

Reflecting on his new role, Mr Panter added: “The partnership between Columbia Group and Noatum Maritime has the potential to set a global benchmark in ship management. Given my background in maritime technology, joint ventures, and my longstanding experience in the Middle East, this was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up.”

Kris Vedat steps into the CEO role with a clear mandate to accelerate SmartSea’s expansion, including the launch of SmartSea Vision, a digital marketplace for maritime services.

“It is a great honour to lead SmartSea at such a pivotal stage,” said Mr Vedat. “My immediate focus is to empower our talented team, strengthen customer relationships, and fast-track the rollout of SmartSea Vision, a platform that will transform how the maritime industry accesses and adopts technology. With SITA’s support, we have a unique opportunity to bring truly interoperable, secure, and aviation-inspired technologies to a traditionally fragmented industry.”

SmartSea’s integration into the UAE’s maritime infrastructure is already underway, with Abu Dhabi emerging as a frontrunner in linking cruise terminals, commercial shipping, air travel, and rail through digital platforms.

“The UAE is heavily investing in multimodal logistics integration connecting cruise terminals, ports, rail, and aviation. By combining SmartSea with SITA’s proven aviation technology, we can help realise this vision and set a new global standard,” added Mr Panter.

This leadership transition forms part of a co-ordinated strategy to ensure SmartSea remains central to Columbia Group’s broader digital ambitions, particularly within the UAE through Noatum-CSM Limited.
