MSC deploys first 24,000 TEU megaships to West Africa

In a landmark moment for maritime trade in Africa, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has become the first shipping line to deploy mega-large container vessels with a capacity of 24,000 TEU on the continent.

The arrival of the MSC DILETTA (pictured) and MSC TÜRKIYE on the Africa Express service, connecting key regions from China and South Korea through Southeast Asia to Ghana, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, and Cameroon, is seen as signalling a significant leap in West Africa's port capabilities.

In terms of investments, MSC is committed to making significant contributions to the efficiency of African ports and expanding its logistics network.

“Our investments are aimed at making African ports more efficient and enhancing the overall logistics infrastructure,” Mr. Toft explained at the Africa CEO Forum held in Abidjan earlier this month, adding: “We are big believers in Africa’s trade future.”

Safety concerns, particularly piracy, were also discussed at the Forum. Despite a decrease in reported piracy incidents, Mr. Toft emphasised the continued importance of precautionary measures to ensure the safety of seafarers. He stated that MSC remains vigilant and regularly adjusts its navigational routes to mitigate piracy risks.

The session concluded with a reaffirmation of MSC’s long-term belief in Africa’s growth potential, driven by demographic trends and expanding trade opportunities.
