The Nautical Institute Academy launches Safety and Assurance Month to support maritime professional development
The Nautical Institute Academy has launched a Safety and Assurance Month initiative to support maritime professionals in strengthening their competence across risk management, safety assurance, operational assessment and incident investigation. Running throughout July, the initiative brings together four online courses designed to help maritime professionals develop practical skills that support safer operations, stronger decision-making and more consistent standards across ship and shore. The courses included in the initiative are:
Mastering Maritime Risk Management 6–9 July, 08:00–12:00 UTC
Designated Person(s) Ashore 14–17 July, 08:30–12:30 UTC
Engineering & Bunkering Assessor 20–24 July, 11:30–15:30 UTC
Marine Incident Investigation 27–30 July, 08:00–12:00 UTC
The initiative reflects The Nautical Institute Academy’s wider commitment to continuing professional development and to supporting maritime professionals throughout their careers.
As the industry responds to growing operational complexity, evolving regulation and increasing scrutiny of safety performance, professional development plays an important role in helping individuals and organisations move beyond reactive compliance towards proactive prevention.
The July courses are designed to strengthen risk awareness, support effective safety management, improve assessment standards and promote organisational learning from incidents.
Mastering Maritime Risk Management helps professionals anticipate hazards and make structured, evidence-based decisions in complex operational environments. The Designated Person(s) Ashore course reinforces understanding of international regulations and the role of effective safety management systems in maintaining accountability between ship and shore.
The Engineering & Bunkering Assessor course supports safer engineering practices and more consistent assessment standards across vessels and fleets, while Marine Incident Investigation helps professionals identify root causes and turn incidents into opportunities for learning and improvement.
Together, the courses aim to help maritime professionals strengthen their technical understanding, professional judgement and practical application of safety and assurance principles.
Somiyeh Djavanroodi (pictured), Head of The Nautical Institute Academy, said: “Safety and assurance depend on people having the right knowledge, confidence and professional judgement to make sound decisions in complex operational environments.
“Our Safety and Assurance Month is designed to support maritime professionals in developing practical skills across risk, compliance, assessment and investigation. By investing in continuing professional development, we can help individuals and organisations move from reactive compliance towards a more proactive, prevention-focused safety culture.”
The courses are relevant to seafarers, shore-based managers, safety professionals, Designated Persons Ashore, assessors, engineers, auditors and others involved in operational safety, compliance and assurance across the maritime sector.
