Latest Britannia loss prevention webinar focuses on why speaking up matters for safety at sea

Britannia P&I Club will explore the role of psychological safety in preventing maritime incidents during its latest loss prevention webinar on Tuesday 22 September at 9am BST.

Titled  ‘Safe to Speak, Safe to Operate: The role of psychological safety in maritime risk prevention’, the session will look at a simple but important question: if someone sees something going wrong onboard, do they feel able to report it?

Shipping invests heavily in procedures, audits, training and compliance, yet incidents can still happen when concerns are not raised or important information fails to reach the right people. Creating an environment where crew members are comfortable speaking up can therefore play an important part in identifying risks before they develop into more serious problems.

The webinar will examine why people sometimes remain silent even when they recognise a potential danger, as well as the influence leadership and workplace culture can have on reporting and decision-making.

Particular attention will be given to the challenges of encouraging open communication among multicultural crews and how a strong speak-up culture can support better information flow, learning and safer day-to-day operations.

The discussion will be led by Charles Chong, Associate Director at Britannia P&I Club, and Dr Joanna Eugenia Bakouni, Learning and Development Manager for Maritime at Maersk Training.
The webinar is open to Britannia Members, seafarers, shipowners, managers, charterers and others across the maritime industry.
