World Maritime Day – the view from St. Kitts and Nevis

Asked to comment on the IMO’s choice of the 2026-7 World Maritime Day theme as ‘Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence’, Gail Stoll, International Registrar of Shipping & Seamen at St. Kitts and Nevis International Ship Registry, replies as follows:

“The IMO’s message reflects the growing pressure on shipping and the need to ensure that international rules deliver results in practice. Geopolitical tensions, security threats and disrupted trade routes are testing the resilience of maritime operations and placing greater demands on seafarers. Meanwhile, decarbonisation, digitalisation and cybersecurity require new skills and stronger oversight.

“For St Kitts and Nevis, the central issue is consistent implementation. Adopting a convention is only the beginning. Its value depends on whether administrations, owners and crews have the competence, resources and support to apply it effectively, particularly as operational pressures increase and the industry continues evolving.

“The priority must be to strengthen the capacity to implement international standards consistently. This means practical technical assistance, closer cooperation and better sharing of expertise, particularly for developing maritime administrations. Flag States need effective oversight, supported by clear accountability across the organisations responsible for putting requirements into practice.

“Seafarers must remain central to these efforts. Their safety, welfare, mental wellbeing and fair treatment deserve sustained attention, alongside training that prepares them for changing technologies and operational demands. We should judge progress by the results achieved: safer ships, better protection of the marine environment and improved conditions for those serving aboard.”
