NorthStandard joins SSI as member with focus on Human Risk and Resilience

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) announces that NorthStandard, marine insurers and member of the International Group of P&I Clubs, has joined SSI as a member.

NorthStandard joins with a particular focus on the SSI's Human Risk & Resilience platform, bringing the perspective of a global marine insurer to work on making people risk, safety, welfare and workforce conditions visible and material in operational and commercial decisions.

NorthStandard's position within the International Group gives it a rare vantage point on risk across the maritime industry, adding discipline and credibility to an ambition SSI has long championed; that seafarers deserve safe, secure and rewarding careers, not just compliance with minimum standards. By bringing NorthStandard’s perspective into SSI’s membership and fifteen years of convening across owners, charterers, financiers and NGOs, we further strengthen our collective standing to transform ambition into action the whole industry can align behind.

Formed through the merger of North P&I Club and The Standard Club in 2023, NorthStandard is a global marine insurer, providing insurance, expert guidance and loss prevention support to the maritime industry. Delivered through its sustainability framework, which is built around the pillars of Partner for Progress, Champion Community and Operate Responsibly, the organisation is committed to supporting its members in protecting, promoting and enhancing the health, wellbeing and safety of their seafarers.

Yves Vandenborn (pictured, right), Head of Loss Prevention Asia Pacific at NorthStandard, said: "The wellbeing of seafarers is fundamental to a safe, resilient and sustainable maritime industry.  As a mutual insurer, we recognise that people are at the heart of global trade and we are pleased to be joining the work of the SSI’s Human Risk & Resilience workstream.  By working collaboratively with our members, industry partners and the wider maritime community, we can help drive positive outcomes, and we look forward to contributing to this important work."

Ellie Besley-Gould (left), Chief Executive, Sustainable Shipping Initiative, said: " A safe and successful shipping industry depends on the people who crew it, and insurers understand risk to those people with a rigour few others in the sector can match. NorthStandard's experience strengthens the evidence base inside our Human Risk and Resilience work, and we're thrilled to have them alongside our members as we shape what better looks like across the industry.”
