Idwal partners with Daiwa Kisen to deliver data-driven fleet insight through independent inspections

Idwal, the global vessel assurance business, has partnered with Daiwa Kisen to deliver independent inspections across selected vessels in its fleet, with a focus on strengthening condition oversight and enabling more informed technical decision-making. The partnership will primarily cover bulk carriers alongside one containership, with scope to expand the programme in line with Daiwa Kisen’s future requirements.

Through the programme, Daiwa Kisen will gain a clear, objective view of vessel condition using Idwal’s standardised inspection methodology. Each inspection generates a consistent, data-led assessment, allowing conditions to be compared reliably across vessels, time periods, and peer groups.

At the core of the partnership is the Idwal ID platform, which transforms inspection findings into accessible insights at both vessel and fleet level. This enables Daiwa Kisen to benchmark performance internally and against the wider market, prioritise maintenance activity more effectively, and track improvements over time through a single, unified view.

In addition to identifying defects, inspections provide structured data that supports smarter planning and reduces operational risk. By linking inspection outcomes with Port State Control (PSC) performance trends, Daiwa Kisen can better anticipate areas of exposure and take proactive steps to improve compliance outcomes across its fleet.

Thom Herbert, Idwal Regional Lead, Asia, said: “We are delighted to support Daiwa Kisen on this programme. The result is not only greater visibility of individual vessel condition, but also a stronger understanding of systemic trends, helping Daiwa Kisen to allocate resources more effectively and protect asset value over the long term.

The focus is on ensuring inspection data translates into clear, practical insight, enabling Daiwa Kisen to prioritise maintenance, manage risk more effectively, and maintain a high and consistent standard across its vessels.”

A Daiwa Kisen spokesperson, said: “We have partnered with Idwal on vessel sale and purchase activities for many years; however, this is our first engagement with their condition improvement program, Idwal ID.

“Idwal is the world’s leading ship inspection company, conducting more than 15 inspections globally every working day. Widely respected by both domestic and international leading shipping companies, their strong reputation was the deciding factor in our partnership.

“Integrating Idwal’s ID platform allows us to gain objective and independent insights into our fleet's condition. This will help us further elevate the quality of our vessel management and strengthen our ability as a shipowner to maintain high standards, ensuring the continued safe and reliable operation of our vessels.”

Nick Owens, CEO of Idwal, said: “Daiwa Kisen is exactly the type of quality-focused owner that Idwal ID was built to support. This partnership is not about a single inspection or a one-off view of vessel condition; it is about equipping Daiwa Kisen with consistent, independent insight across its fleet.

For owners focused on asset quality, the value lies in having objective, comparable data they can use to maintain standards, prioritise investment and strengthen technical oversight over time. Daiwa Kisen’s approach reflects that, and we are proud to support the company through this partnership.”
