The Mission to Seafarers issues call to address welfare matters exposed by US-Iran conflict
The Mission to Seafarers has responded to reports of an agreement regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Peter Rouch, Secretary General of The Mission to Seafarers, welcomed the development but pointed out that for affected seafarers and their families “the consequences of this conflict will endure long after normal trade patterns resume.
“It is our hope that this agreement marks the beginning of a sustained period of stability in the region. If these hopes are realised this will be an opportunity for the industry and governmental bodies to take stock of the welfare matters exposed by this conflict - presumption of safe evacuation for vessels caught by sudden conflict, presumed humanitarian access and viable repatriation for crew stranded by conflict, enforcement of maritime regulations and agreements relating to crew welfare.
“We will continue to work with partners across the Gulf and the wider shipping industry to ensure that those serving at sea receive the support, reassurance, and practical assistance they may need in the days and weeks ahead.”
