AST Network offers upgrade to full GMDSS compliance with Thrane system
Maritime satellite communications and marine electronics provider AST Network , announces it has availability of the Lars Thrane LT-4200S GMDSS System – delivering full GMDSS support via the Iridium network, along with robust voice and data capabilities for vessels of all types operating anywhere in the world.
The LT-4200S marks a new era in maritime safety and connectivity, offering mariners an advanced satellite terminal that not only meets GMDSS requirements, but also functions as a comprehensive communications hub onboard. Vessel operators now have genuine choice in how they access global maritime distress and safety services – benefitting from the expansion of GMDSS capability beyond traditional single-network limitations.
Operating on the Iridium satellite network, the LT-4200S provides truly global coverage, including Sea Area A4 and polar regions – areas where legacy systems historically relied on HF radio due to lack of satellite access. This breakthrough eliminates the need for separate HF equipment for compliance in high-latitude waters, simplifying vessel setups whilst improving reliability and reach.
Crucially, the LT-4200S combines essential functions into one compact solution. In addition to distress alerting and Maritime Safety Information (MSI) broadcast, it supports direct safety voice calling, a vital feature in emergencies where spoken communication can save lives. Unlike earlier systems, the LT-4200S allows users to place both emergency and standard voice calls, alongside data connectivity for email and basic internet access. This all-in-one capability makes the terminal an ideal candidate, not just for GMDSS compliance but also as a backup communications system for day-to-day operations – offering crews and operators peace of mind through redundancy and reliability.
Installation is simplified thanks to a streamline, single-cable antenna-to-terminal design, making deployment efficient and reducing time and costs. Designed for harsh marine environments, the LT-4200S is rugged, dependable, and built to last with minimal maintenance.
“The LT-4200S is a powerful addition to our maritime safety portfolio, and one we’re proud to offer our customers,” said Lukasz Latosinski, General Manager at AST Networks. “It opens up choice, enables truly global GMDSS coverage, and consolidates safety and standard communications into a single terminal. This reflects our commitment to giving mariners the tools they need to operate safely and stay connected—wherever their voyage takes them.”
AST Networks offers a comprehensive range of services including satellite airtime, hardware supply, engineering consultation, marine electronics, installation, and truly global 24/7 support. The company’s advanced platforms for data management and secure IP connectivity help customers monitor, control, and optimise remote assets in real-time, and it is also a leading provider of GMDSS solutions, vessel tracking, and crew welfare services.
