No respite for shipping in Hormuz: INTERTANKO

Tanker body INTERTANKO reports that attacks have continued on a nightly basis on ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, with multiple ships being hit over the last week.

However, unreliable reporting continues to hamper threat assessments with several ships not reporting incidents despite credible reports of the attacks, it adds. The US military reports transits of around 25 per night through the Strait of Hormuz, both inbound and out. The outlook remains unchanged with an expectation of attacks continuing.

Meanwhile, Puntland defence forces in Somalia have carried out multiple attacks on pirate ships held off their coastline, continues INTERTANKO. Whilst four ships were freed from captivity, in at least one of the operations multiple seafarers were killed and others injured. At the time of writing, only one ship remains under the control of pirates as it lies outside of the Puntland area of operation.

In the Red Sea, the situation for shipping remains calm, but attacks continue ashore, concludes the tanker body’s weekly update, with the port of Yanbu having received multiple attacks on Thursday this week. Ships in the harbour and at anchor were undamaged, but first reports indicate that extensive damage has been sustained ashore. Impacts on loading rates are unknown. The Houthis are continuing to make advances on land but have again reiterated that shipping is not a target at this time.
