Sea Cargo Charter signatories look to boost maritime sector’s climate transparency

Last week, the Sea Cargo Charter gathered signatories in Geneva for its sixth annual meeting, reflecting on achievements and discussing the association’s future direction in a rapidly evolving landscape.

The meeting marked a forward-looking step for the initiative, as signatories explored how to build on its strong foundation and further strengthen its role in advancing climate transparency across the industry.

Discussions focused on unlocking deeper insights from the growing pool of shared performance data, while working sessions allowed signatories to share their real-world experiences in implementing operational efficiency measures. The meeting also created space for open exchange, helping surface priorities and strategies for the road ahead.

Founded in 2020, the Sea Cargo Charter is a framework helping charterers and shipowners track and disclose how their shipping activities align with decarbonisation targets. In last year’s annual disclosure report, its signatories reported over 90% of their eligible emissions. The 2026 report will be published in June.

The Sea Cargo Charter welcomes all charterers and shipowners of ships in the dry bulk and tanker trades. It applies to companies occupying any position along the charterparty chain: charterers, sub-charterers, disponent owners, and registered owners with commercial control.
