CMA CGM and partners launch zero-direct-emission electric barge in Vietnam

In order to support Nike’s supply chain decarbonisation efforts, partners CMA CGM, Nike and Gemadept have launched a new electric inland waterway transport solution in Vietnam.

The 100% electric barge will connect Nike’s inland drop-off location in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Binh Duong province) to Gemalink deep-sea terminal, covering a 180 km round trip with zero direct greenhouse gas emissions.

Powered by batteries and certified renewable electricity from a dedicated solar farm at Gemalink, the solution is expected to avoid approximately 778 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

This innovative end-to-end solution brings together an electric barge, dedicated charging infrastructure and renewable energy to accelerate lower-carbon logistics, say the partners.
